every year . . .

. . . I make the same joke, and every year no one laughs. Today as part of my first period/homeroom, I had to pass out ballots so students could vote for members of the Homecoming Court. After I had passed them all out and students were contemplating the ballots with far more vigor than I've ever seen them attack a Spanish quiz, I said, "Remember . . . it's not a popularity contest." Nobody laughed.

You see, it is a popularity contest. That's the joke. Maybe it was too early in the day to hit them with something so intellectual.
