trash night

Why is it that every night that I have to take the trash out, Mumbles is the on-duty guard?

Yes, the time has come for me to introduce another character into the plot of life here at Puertas de Alcala (the name of our apartment building). Mumbles is one of the security guards here. We call him Mumbles because . . . he mumbles. He is probably the friendliest of all the guards. Friendliness is usually not a bad thing, and its not in this case. Its just that he loves to talk to us (mostly me), and he's very difficult to understand. Let me give you an example. Here is an exerpt from the long "conversation" I just had with him as I was taking out the trash:

Mumbles: (fast and slurred) Ustemhduh la hunderya le yantaloonde . . . guitarra?
Me: huh?
Mumbles: (not any slower or less slurred) Ustemhduh la hunderya le yantaloonde . . . guitarra?
Me: Si? Yo toco la guitarra??
Mumbles: Cuantomelo cosomosotoso la ustenosimiloso yum yum ya so loo di alla?
Me: huh?
Mumbles: Cuantomelo cosomosotoso la ustenosimiloso yum yum ya so loo di alla?
Me: (I nod in agreement hoping he didn't just ask if he could crash at our place when his shift is over) Si.

Basically, it continued like that for about fifteen minutes. He usually talks to me about one of the following:

guitar - He says he plays a little would love to play more. He is a big fan of classical instrumental guitar. We've actually traded a few cds. I let him borrow a Phil Keaggy cd (Lights of Madrid).

life in the US - He always has questions about the geography, people and cost of things there.

Saving private Ryan - My name is Bryan. Bryan sounds a lot like Ryan. I guess that fact makes for a pretty funny joke. He and a few of the other guards love to bring it up pretty often.

Tonight he was also telling me that he has written some poetry. He said he may bring it for me to translate to English. That might be fun . . . as long as he's not a mumbly writer.

Anyway, thats a brief introduction to Mumbles. Maybe later I'll tell you about some of the other guards: Little gray-haired guy, Young guard, Baldy Balderson, Chinito, My cousin Vinny and Police Hat guard. They probably all have real names.
